The Slate Creek campground is just south of the shores of Fontenelle Reservoir, on the Green River, and just north of Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. The area is a mecca for birdwatching and Elkhorn Valley Recreation Site/ Little North Santiam Recreation Area. To the north is Lake Labish, a marshland drained in the early twentieth century to create agricultural land, and to the east farms and small towns meet the foothills of the Cascade Range. Salem’s western boundary ended at the Willamette River until , when West Salem was incorporated into the city.
